Making Faces

Amazon.com Review

The faces that Kevyn Aucoin has made are stellar and luminous: Cher, Tina Turner, Vanessa Williams, and Julia Roberts are but a few of the stars in Aucoin’s galaxy of clientele. More than making do, making up is the art of achieving your own special look, and Aucoin insists that there are no hard and fast rules–except for the obvious ones, such as “Don’t put lipstick in your eye.” The first section offers, in his own words, Aucoin’s favorite ideas, tricks, and techniques for enhancing, defining, and altering facial features with makeup. You’ll learn how to care for your skin, what foundation to use with your skin type, and transformational magic for that central player in the drama of beauty: eyes. Through his gallery of noncelebrity before-and-afters, Aucoin shows clearly how to use his fundamentals to achieve dozens of different looks. The gorgeous final chapter reads like a list of exotic characters in a play–the Vamp, the Siren, the (more…)

The Prescription Drug Guide for Nurses

“This book was written by a senior lecturer in health science with a great deal of input from nurses. It highlights the burden of treatment and is a resource for non-medical prescribers in identifying adverse drug reactions and for recognising definitions and classifications. … The sections on ‘potential problems’ and ‘suggestions for prevention and management’ were particularly enlightening. The book provides ideas for better patient consultations through discussions about medications and their effects.” Nursing Standard “This likeable little book is a definite contribution to the field and should find a home in every ward, unit and hospital library shelf.” International Emergency Nursing “This book is exceedingly timely. I am certain it will be invaluable to both undergraduate and post graduate student nurses, and, also act as a continuing reference source. Thoroughly recommended.”Molly Courtenay, Reading University, UK “Sue (more…)

The Man Who Laughs

From Library Journal

The recent success of the stage adaptation of Les Miserables has made Hugo’s name widely known to the general public. Atlantean Press marks this resurgence with the inauguration of a series of re-published works by Hugo. The Man Who Laughs ( L’Homme qui rit , 1869), generally unavailable in English since the turn of the century, is the first volume in the series. This translation, by an unidentified translator, remains highly readable. The work itself, however, despite the touching tale of the love between the blind Dea and the deformed Gwynplaine, is highly stylized, extremely long, and often tedious. It will be interesting primarily for readers wishing to gain familiarity with a lesser known work by the father of French romanticism and with the tastes of the French reading public at the time.- Anthony Caprio, Oglethorpe Univ., AtlantaCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
